Al-Sawari and the Graduates Organize the Arab Conference: Mobile Theater and Alternative Spaces
AlSawari Theater has announced its final preparations for launching the first Arab theatrical conference titled "Mobile Theater and Alternative Spaces," in collaboration with the Alumni Club, in celebration of World Theater Day and the thirtieth anniversary of the establishment of AlSawari Theater (the Pearl Jubilee). The conference will take place on Monday, March 28th, 2022, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Isa bin Salman Cultural Hall at the Alumni Club in Adliya.
The conference aims to explore the impact of different styles of theatrical performances on audience reception in the modern era dominated by virtual reality, multiple communication channels, and fragmented communicative inputs. This makes the issue of traditional reception and integration with theatrical performance a matter in need of research and study. Hussein Al-Rifai, Head of the Networking and Training Committee at AlSawari Theater, said, "Theater, as one of the living human performing arts, faces an existential challenge in an era biased towards everything virtual at the expense of everything living, tangible, and humane. Therefore, this conference seeks to investigate the ability of mobile theater and alternative spaces to achieve the desired human impact and undermine the dominance of the virtual environment on human communication."
The first axis of the conference focuses on street theater and alternative spaces, with Dr. Bashar Al-Alawi presenting a paper entitled "The Concept of Street Theater and Its Function." Dr. Bashar Al-Alawi is an Iraqi theater director and critic who earned his Ph.D. with distinction from the Department of Theater Arts at the College of Fine Arts at the University of Babylon in 2018. Next, Dr. Said Karimi will present a paper titled "The Audience in Poetic Theater between Emotional Reaction and Positive Interaction." Dr. Karimi is a Moroccan academic who holds a Ph.D. in Modern Arabic Literature specializing in theater, focusing on "Theater of Cruelty and Its Impact on Experimentation" in Western and Moroccan theater with a very high distinction. He has numerous published books and articles in peer-reviewed theater and literature journals.
Following that, Dr. Saadi Younes will present a paper representing the essence of his experience in street theater entitled "Street Theater: Form and Content." Dr. Younes holds a Ph.D. in French Theater Literature and has worked in France with directors such as Ariane Mnouchkine. From Egypt, director Adel Abdel Wahab will share a live experience from Alexandria in his paper "Necessary Initiative for Theater and Alternative Spaces." Abdel Wahab is a theater director and artistic director of the (Necessary Theater) forum and festival, an international forum for contemporary theater in Alexandria established in 2012, with its seventh edition in March 2021.
In the second axis, the renowned Arab writer Paul Chaul will discuss his experience in following AlSawari Theater in a paper titled "Employing Alternative Spaces in AlSawari Theater Experience." Chaul is a modern poet, translator, literary critic, and Lebanese playwright with many creative and critical works.
